Lockable Plantation Shutters: Security, Privacy and Flyscreens Combined

Yes, plantation shutters can work as part of your home security, and in Brisbane they can do something a lot of window coverings can’t: let you keep a window or door open for fresh air while the room stays locked and screened. Our Lockable Tough Shutters are powder-coated aluminium shutters that can be locked and fitted with flyscreens, so security, privacy and ventilation come together in one product.

The honest version is worth knowing before you buy, though. A lockable shutter adds a strong physical layer and a visible deterrent. It is not the same thing as a certified security screen, and it shouldn’t replace the locks on your windows and doors. Here’s how to think about it.

What “lockable” actually means

Locking is an option on our Lockable Tough Shutters, which are powder-coated aluminium with a timber-look satin finish. There are two ways to do it.

A single flush bolt. A neat, keyless option for everyday security, simple to operate from the inside.

Double shootbolts with a key lock. This secures the top and bottom of the shutter with a single turn of the key, for a stronger hold.

If you’ve read our comparison of timber, Tough, Supertough and PVC, you’ll know timber remains our top overall recommendation for its construction quality and wide panels. When security and flyscreens are the priority, Tough Shutters are the ones we point people to, because they are the range built to be lockable and to take integrated flyscreens. You can see the full options on our lockable shutters and flyscreens page.

Why lockable Tough Shutters work well in Brisbane

Ventilation without the worry. Brisbane homes live with windows and doors open for much of the year. With Tough Shutters locked over an open window, you get airflow through the louvres while the opening itself is blocked. It’s a combination ordinary curtains and blinds can’t offer.

Privacy you control. The louvres tilt to let light in while limiting the view from outside, and closed shutters block the view completely. Less visibility into your home also means fewer opportunities for anyone casing it.

A visible barrier. Solid aluminium panels with bolts top and bottom put a real barrier in front of the glass. From the street, plantation shutters can look much the same as any other, so we place a sticker on the glass warning that the shutters are locked. That warning can be a deterrent in itself.

A strong frame. Tough Shutters use a screw-together frame system designed for strength, and the aluminium and powder coating hold up to Queensland sun and weather in a way that suits long-term use.

Flyscreens: the other half of the combination

Flyscreens are custom-made for our fixed and hinged shutters and sit neatly behind them, which makes them especially handy where traditional flyscreens don’t fit well, such as Queenslanders, casement windows and sash windows. It means you can leave a window open at night with the shutter locked and the insects kept out.

Where a locked shutter adds something

Security screens typically cover only half of the window opening. If the glass is broken in the uncovered section, a normal plantation shutter can simply be pushed open, and that gives access to the room. A locked Tough Shutter secures the whole window, so anyone trying to get through would have to break through the shutter itself, which makes a lot of noise. That is a major deterrent.

It is a deterrent, though, not a guarantee. Think of it as one more layer that makes a break-in slower, louder and less appealing.

What lockable shutters are not

This is the part worth being clear about, because it affects how you use them.

They are not a tested security screen. In Australia, security screens and grilles are assessed against AS 5039, which includes tests such as knife shear, jemmy, probe, pull and impact. A genuine security door or screen carries a compliance label, and without one it is not a certified security door. Tough Shutters add a robust layer, but we don’t market them as a substitute for a certified security screen. If you need that level of protection on a particular door or window, a compliant security screen is the right product, and shutters can sit alongside it for privacy, light control and style.

They don’t replace your existing locks. Think of lockable shutters as an extra layer on top of the locks on your windows and doors, not a replacement.

They are not a substitute for child safety devices. A locked shutter panel can make it harder for little ones to open up a window, but it isn’t a replacement for purpose-made child safety devices.

Security and fire safety: don’t lock yourself in

Any lock that stops someone getting in can also stop you getting out, and that matters most in an emergency. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that home security measures are important, but that you shouldn’t let them trap you inside your home in an emergency. Its guidance includes choosing window security that can be opened from the inside, keeping keys accessible but out of reach of intruders, and showing everyone in the house, including overnight visitors, how to get out.

One thing that helps here: all keys fit all locks on our shutters, so you’re never hunting for the right key for the right window. It also means one lost key affects every lock, so it’s worth keeping a spare somewhere safe.

For shutters, that translates to a few sensible habits:

  • Keep the key close. If you choose a key lock, keep the key somewhere everyone in the house can find it quickly, but out of sight and out of reach from outside.
  • Think about bedrooms. The keyless flush bolt option can be operated from the inside without a key, so it’s worth discussing for sleeping areas when you talk to us.
  • Consider bolt height. The flush bolts can be placed high on the shutters so that small children can’t open them. Adults should still be able to reach the bolt easily, especially in an emergency.
  • Teach everyone. Make sure every person in the house knows how the locks work.

Which shutters are right for you?

For most Brisbane homes, the decision looks like this:

  • Windows and French doors that you want locked and screened: Tough Shutters with a lock and flyscreen.
  • Outdoor areas like patios, verandahs, balconies and alfresco spaces: Supertough, our dedicated external aluminium range, available in hinged, sliding or bi-fold designs.
  • Where beautiful construction and a custom paint colour are the priority: timber, and ask us what’s possible for your openings.

Frequently asked questions

Can plantation shutters be used as a security feature?

Yes, as an extra layer. Our Lockable Tough Shutters can be fitted with a flush bolt or double shootbolts with a key lock, giving you a strong physical barrier and a visible deterrent. They are not a certified security screen and don’t replace the locks on your windows and doors.

Can plantation shutters lock windows and doors?

Tough Shutters can be made lockable, including in French door designs, so you can keep a door or window open for ventilation while the shutter is locked. Talk to our team about the best lock type for each opening.

Do lockable shutters come with flyscreens?

Flyscreens are available as custom-made options for our fixed and hinged shutters, hidden neatly behind the shutters. They work particularly well on Queenslanders, casements and sash windows.

Are lockable shutters as secure as a security screen?

No, and we don’t claim they are. Security screens are tested to AS 5039 and carry a compliance label. Tough Shutters add a strong, visible layer on top of your existing locks, with the added benefits of privacy, light control and ventilation. Keep in mind that security screens typically cover only half of the opening, whereas a locked Tough Shutter secures the whole window, which acts as a deterrent if the glass is broken.

Are keyed shutter locks safe in a fire?

They can be, as long as you plan for it. Keep the key accessible to everyone in the home but out of reach from outside, make sure everyone knows how to open the shutters, and consider the keyless flush bolt for bedrooms. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that security measures shouldn’t trap you inside in an emergency.

How long does it take to get lockable shutters installed?

Supply and installation typically takes around 10 weeks, and that timeframe holds roughly 95% of the time, though it can vary with customs and shipping.

Do plantation shutters help with energy efficiency and reduce air conditioning costs in Brisbane?

Yes. Well-fitted plantation shutters provide meaningful thermal insulation through a specific mechanism: they create an air gap between the shutter and the window, and this trapped layer of air acts as a thermal barrier. In Brisbane’s climate, where summer heat management is the primary concern, this air gap reduces the amount of heat transferring from the window glass into the room, helping to keep indoor temperatures lower without relying solely on air conditioning. The effect is particularly significant on west-facing and north-facing windows that receive direct afternoon and morning sun. By reducing the heat load entering the room, shutters can contribute to lower energy consumption and reduced cooling costs over time. This benefit is a function of fit quality — a shutter that fits precisely to the window opening traps air more effectively than one with gaps around the frame. Brisbane Shutters’ custom-measured and installed shutters are fitted to the millimetre, with Nathan noting in his review that the shutters “look they’re built in to the house, not retrofitted.” The thermal insulation benefit applies across timber, aluminium, and PVC shutter materials, though the quality of the fit and the thickness of the slat affects the degree of insulation. What fabric is used in Brisbane Shutters’ external blinds, and what warranty do they come with?

Brisbane Shutters’ external blinds use HVG fabric, which is Australian-made in Melbourne. HVG is a premium outdoor blind fabric selected for durability in Australian conditions — UV resistance, weather performance, and longevity in the sun and humidity levels typical of Brisbane and South East Queensland. Michelle Ault, who had external blinds installed on her outdoor area, specifically noted the fabric quality and a 10-year warranty that comes with the product, describing the installation as “flawless” and the wire guide mechanism as working exactly as promised. External blind options at Brisbane Shutters include Wireguide, Straight Drop Shades, and Zipscreen Shades — each suited to different outdoor configurations and wind exposure levels. The Zipscreen uses a track system to seal the blind against wind and provide greater weather protection, while Wireguide uses stainless steel wires to guide the blind and maintain tension without a full track enclosure. All external blind products are custom-measured and installed by Brisbane Shutters within approximately a 30km radius of Brisbane, with a free measure and quote available.
